A Tour of Wells-next-the-Sea

The town of Wells-next-the-Sea has much to offer for a short break or longer stay on the North Norfolk Coast. With an exciting history and plenty to see and do for all the family everyone is sure to have a great time!

Our tour starts at The Buttlands. This large area is believed to have been historically used for Archery practise. It is now a popular place for people to sit on a summers day.

Now exit the Buttlands at the North East corner and follow the road to the right. Take the next left on to Staithe Street. This is the main shopping street in Wells, and has a wide range of shops. Walk down the street to the Quay.

The Quay is the heart of Wells, with many shops and restaurants facing the water. Fishing boats still use the Quay and this is where The Albatros is moored.

Signs of Wells' history as a port can be seen from the loading gantry overhanging the Quay. This was built between 1903 and 1906, but has since been converted in to flats. The Granary, which has been converted to a theatre, on Staithe Street was also used by boats bringing corn to the town.

Next walk down the left hand side of the quay to the Harbour Masters hut and along the Sea Defences. This walk will take you approximately a mile from the town to Wells Beach. If you don't want to walk this distance the Wells Harbour Railway runs parallel to the path, as does a road to the beach.

At the far end of the path you will pass the Lifeboat Station. The lifeboat plays a large part in the town, especially following the Lifeboat disaster in 1880 where 11 of the 13 lifeboat crew drowned when the Eliza Adams lifeboat went to help the stricken Ocean Queen .

Wells' and Holkham Beach is part of the Holkham estate. The beach is flanked on one side by the famous Pinewoods which provide a great place to walk.

The sandy beach brings us to the end of our tour of Wells. If you would like to visit the town, please take a look at the accommodation on offer in our Directory Pages to book your stay.
